Casapueblo

Casapueblo (Maldonado, Punta Ballena) – located just outside of the resort enclave of Punta del Este, this architectural wonder is the home of Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró (the white-washed structures were developed as a citadel-sculpture similar to homes found in the Greek island of Santorini).

Originally built as a tribute to Páez’ son Carlitos (a survivor of a Uruguayan Air Force plane crash), a hotel has since been added to the house (Club Hotel Casapueblo). Nowadays, the non-hotel portion of this site is a museum for art and architecture enthusiasts. There is also various artworks that are on sale. Tourists come here to both marvel at this structure, as well as watch the sunset nearby.

Admission: US$5 (adult & youth 12 years or older), free for those under 12 years. Hours: 9 am – sunset. See the museum’s website for more info: www.carlospaezvilaro.com.uy
